Any tips how I can make this more user friendly or pitfalls that I
need to be aware of are welcome.

Put stuff in the corners to work as bass traps (a comfy chair, a stack
of amps, the bookshelves). Hang some foam or some decorative blankets
on the walls to knock down the flutter echoes.

Work vertically as much as possible. You will quickly run out of room.

That's a good suggestion.

Here's how my computer workspace turned out in the rec room corner:

Since the photo I added another set of speakers under those for
'nearfield' monitoring plus some other stuff from a scanner to other
misc. gear.
To the left and unseen here is a door to a woodworking/soldering/
toolshed room in the garage and after that a big closet for mics,
cables, tools etc.

You'll need a suprisingly small footprint for a computer if you go
with a laptop, and they're pretty quiet too. I do my gaming, video and
audio work on a desktop which is a dualcore at 3,4Ghz but my laptop is
also a 2,66Ghz dualcore and quite enough for audio work as well.
External card works with both machines anyway. Anyway I suggest you
indeed build vertically when placing speakers etc. and use wallmounts
for monitors, unless you use a laptop of course. Bear also in mind
that need for electrics sockets may skyrocket; I have about 30 in use
which means five large extension cords...

For the machine, when you get around to it...get a BIG display. The
laptop has a 1600x1050 which is not enough...on the desktop I get over
3000 pixels width with the dual monitors, but sometimes I feel like
all I need is more desktop space! My dream would be to get one around
32" 1920x1080 widescreen monitor with one of the 1600x1200 4:3 as
secondary display...maybe some of these days :-) my friend has
dual-32" monitors for his Cubase machine and that's hard to beat.

BTW man, that's an impressive guitar collection! Me, I'd sell all but
maybe three of them and use the money to upgrade my computer and
display :-) but that's indeed some fine looking instruments there!

Cheers,

Dee
