Doesn't really have much either. Remember CSNET? Remember that usenet was
supposed to be free? Now your ISP has to pay for access to it, and as I
understand it, many don't think it is worth it. Someone has to host it
because it is something. Remember how badly it worked all those years ago,
like having to read the messages in order...having to download them all to
read them...on a computer with say 256K of memory? I do! Your site doesn't
seem to remember these things though...and while I don't claim to know
everything, I just go with what I know, I don't go looking things up on the
internet.

Yeah, sure. I get usenet free as my ISP still hosts it's own
news-server (quite a few here in Aus still do). Many (and
seemingly a large number in the US) don't as they don't consider it
worth the cost of administering an extra box for little dollar reward.

I remember grabbing it via a UUCP feed with a glorious (and
expensive) 2400bps modem. So what? That's not 'my' site at all, BTW.

An easier analogy for you to understand would be saying that it's like
the WWW - no organisation or business 'owns' it. It just is.

Cheers,
Andy.

My ISP has to pay for USENET, and I pay a fee to my ISP for service that includes
USENET.

FWIW, I beleive USENET to be a central database to which these messages are sent.
This database is run as a for profit business to generate revenue to pay for the
facilities. ISPs pay this business (or businesses) to access the database.
Messages are distributed from the databases. USENET is not what it was in the
1980's, when various institutions provided the facility for USENET free of
charge. It is done for profit by a business or businesses. The core business is
in fact called USENET. If I am wrong so be it! I'm more than willing to learn,
but I'm not going to read any lame links, especially links like wikepedia.

FWIW, I came to this in the age of bitnet, which was the best. Internet has been
a disaster, IMHO.

I am flattered by al the people who care so much about what I think though. I
don't care that much about it!

Anyhoo, I'm so pumped by the fact that so many people care about me that I am
going to go to Kentucky!
