I bought my first ever valve amp - the Orange Tiny Terror combo. As some
of you will probably know, it only has three controls - volume, tone and
gain. The thing is, if I turn the gain completely down, I don't get any
sound, even if the amp volume and guitar volume are on max. Actually I
need to put the gain up to about three before I get any sound at all.

It seems strange to have this 'deadzone' on the dial so I was wondering

Doesn't sound that bizarre... Both the Volume and Gain controls are part of
the gain stage....having one off would make the sound off.

Now, if the knob said 'distortion' or something, that would be different.

Between the two, which is the preamp, and which is the master?
