breaking out!

Knew a guy that never cared about chord names. He had learned the basic
chords but didn't know their names. Still he was faboulous when it came to
finding the fingering of chords that would fit any given song. Any sus, dim
or whatever chord,- he found the suitable fingering. Isn't that what great
guys like, Page Ritchie, etc. do ? And isn't that how you break out of the
box when soloing? Never mind theory, play what's in your head????
