I was at the grocery store today and a Beach Boys song came over the soundWhen I gave my nephew a guitar a few years back, I know his parents were
system (Wouldn't it be nice). There was a man and his son near me. The kid
who was I'd guess 10-12 says, yelling really, "Alriiiiiiiight more Beatles".
The dad said, "no, it's not the Beatles". The kid insisted it was. Not sure
why the dad didn't just say right off instead of keep telling the kid no.
But after about 5 "no it's not" he finally said who it was.
The kid said, "oh, well I love this song but I wanna hear more Beatles, the
Beatles ROCK!". As they proceeded down the isle the kid kept going on and on
about the Beatles. All I could do is smile.
I'm actually witnessing similar things more and more often. Like we got
an inquiry for our vacant drummer position from a 23 year old. I sent him
our ultra-classic rock set list (late 50's to very early 70's) thinking he
would go, "oh, yeah, well maybe some other time". But he wrote back super
jazzed and said he loves all that stuff. Cool!
Anyone else have a story like this?
SotR
a little concerned about what his choice of music would be, but early on
he was mainly interested in Beatles, Eagles, Chicago, pretty mainstream
stuff. He's broadened out since then, but prefers music that requires
actual talent to make. He's gone to Lollapalooza a few times to see the
alternative bands he's a big fan of and still likes, but he was also
interested in going to Crossroads last year to see B.B. King. The
afternoon sets were really varied, everything from blues to the Joe
Walsh/Eagles songs to R&B and Albert Lee ripping it up on Country Boy.
Now what's loaded on his IPOD is so varied it reminds me of an early
60's AM radio station. I think curiosity and easily being able to
download songs is responsible for the broad interest in all kinds of
music a lot of these kids have.
