Very recently I've been been messing around with slide. I've tuned a
guitar to open G and one to open D. I also got one of those Rogue
lapsteels (it was $59 on scratch and dent), and I have it tuned to
open D for the moment.
To me, as a novice, it seems that it would be pretty easy to translate
licks and scales from D to G tuning and vice versa. And of course open
A and open E would be easy to learn, once I know open G and open D
really well, since the patterns are all the same, just the guitar
tuned higher. I'm thinking if I got really good at one of these 4
tunings, I'd be able to do the other 3 whenever I needed to without a
lot more work.
I guess I could play slide in standard as well, but previously I've
never thought much of the sound I was getting when I tried that. I
guess I could use C6 on the lapsteel, but I haven't really looked into
it yet much.
I'm just curious what tunings you folks use.
Anybody gig with a open tuned guitars for slide in addition to
standard tuned ones for non-slide? Or anyone here play open tuning all
the time, for non-slide stuff?
I used to gig with 3 guitars: standard, open G,and open E. I could quickly re-tune the standard to drop D. Later I just used standard and open G (the strat I used for open E got stolen). I almost never used slide, just fingers doing bends, and palm muting at the bridge. It beat the hassle of looking for the slide all the time.
