I'm forming a new band and I need some ideas. As of now I have no originals.

I like country, bluegrass and classic rock. I'd be content just doing some country standards, and, of the new music, I really prefer country.

But my new bass player (haven't met yet) wants to know what to practice and I'm at a loss.

The last band I was in we used the democratic approach and that didn't work out that well. Seemed nobody was really happy and everything was a compromise.

Thanks,

The problem you've got isn't what songs to play, but how to get your band working as a team. If you can do that, then developing a play list will be easy.

I usually deplore self help books, but see if you can find a copy of "Group Dynamics for Teams" By Daniel Levi.

The book will help you understand a bit more about how to get your group working as a team with a well defined goal.

I'm sure that is excellent advice that I will never follow. I looked at that book on Amazon. $66 and it reads like a text book. Complete with end of chapter quizzes. Maybe I could get a Cliffs Notes version. Or "Group Dynamics for Dummies".

But you're absolutely right. There are complicated group dynamics involved and some insight in the subject would no doubt be of great help.

Your comment about "well defined goal" got me thinking. This maybe where the democratic method fails. The "group" dilutes the goal to the point it no longer exist. It makes me think a totalitarian approach is a more practical solution.

Thanks for your comment....
