I'm forming a new band and I need some ideas. As of now I have no
originals.
I like country, bluegrass and classic rock. I'd be content just doing some
country standards, and, of the new music, I really prefer country.
But my new bass player (haven't met yet) wants to know what to practice
and I'm at a loss.
The last band I was in we used the democratic approach and that didn't
work out that well. Seemed nobody was really happy and everything was a
compromise.
Thanks,

The simple answer would be to have him practice 5-10 songs you already know,
and mix them up...some country (old and new) and some classic rock. And for
God's sakes, keep the list simple!! No sense in attempting "Carry on My
Wayward Son" unless you know everyone can hit the punches all at the same
time. Stick to easy 3-4 chord songs you hear all the local bands playing to
start. Once everyone finds their "mark", then you start tossing in songs
that are more intricate.
Like one of the other posters suggested, let the vocalist decide what works
for them (or learn to transpose). If you can't sing a song written in "A",
try dropping it to "G". If the other members sing, let them choose the
songs THEY feel comfortable with. The more people that can sing lead, the
better chance you'll actually have a voice the next day.
Bottom line, develop a chemistry together, and once you have that...the song
choices will be much easier to come up with.
Good luck!
