Usenet has always been "interesting" but there is no denying that it's
changed drastically in the last ten years. Mark one, is eternal
september. Mark two is google groups. That was the deathblow.
Honestly - for all the *** talking, you're now better of joining
private forums, moderated forums - for example the tony iommi message
board. The same thing has happened to many newsgroups over the last 10
years. rec.games.go now has godiscussions and another forum, I believe
- you saw this starting to happen on rec.martial-arts way back in
2000-2002 with virtualkwoon.com (now defunct i believe) but now the
transition is complete with places like emptyflower, chenwired,
aikidoforum, etc. and dozens of important blogs (like tim cartmell's
forums, and formosaneijia to name two).
That's where all the "old regulars" went, because, simply and frankly,
usenet isn't worth it anymore. WE lost. We lost the fight. And it
shows.
I haven't been here for that long so I don't know what the private/
moderated forums are for guitar players/etc. There should be a few
sticking around who could point you the way.
But yeah, usenet just doesn't matter anymore. It's a fucking joke,
seriously.

Yeah, I've been subscribing heavily (almost 7000 posts) to guitar-related
groups for about eights years now. There has been a steady decline in
on-topic, non-troll activity over a long period, but it seems to have been
exponential over the past few months. I don't like ether the principle or
the structure (what I've seen, that is) of moderated groups and forums, so
I guess I'll keep battling on in Usenet.
The trolls, weirdos and spammers don't bother me per se, I just ignore
them all when they are in troll, weird or spam mode. However, newsgroups
are losing otherwise good subscribers because they are unwise (insert your
own adjective here) enough to respond to them, sometimes as new threads,
then they go off in a huff when they are abused for their trouble.
Tony D
though, unfortunately.
