anyone using an all-in-one hard-disc recorder for home recordings?

horror stories or recommendations welcome

friend of mine wants to buy one and i've never even seen one up close

Widows - mice - reboots - screen to small to see in poor light - the
computer has everything including things you'll never use & way to
complicated - I hate computers near my music------
I have a Tascam 8 standalone, I like it. real knobs and faders , some
effects & reverb . not to complicated and gets the job done.
yes it has limitations, only 2 live at a time, but it depend what you
want ( I just want to play and get some ideas down, overdub myself to
work out various parts etc. ) . Ed S.

There is often no need to overcomplicate PC recorders, either: things like
Audacity and even the m-Powered Pro Tools versions use the tape transport
concept. Yes, these have many features you may not use, but you don't have
to. You can start recording in just a few minutes; there isn't a lot you
have to know.

uh, well, it CAN get more complicated than that.

It can, but it doesn't have to. On this system, it took me under an hour to install the audio interface AND Pro Tools to the point where I could record with it. Much of that time was waiting for the installers and getting the iLok installed and registered.

It took about 20 minutes to add Audacity, including the time to download. Yes, I use both.

And that's on Vista.

Especially with Windows
PCs. Drivers, soundcard, etc...

I pretty much never use soundcards for anything but straight spoken word that doesn't require high resolution.

things CAN get kind of hairy and from what
I've come to understand, for a lot of guys, it can be a frustrating
procedure to even get the software to "see" the card, and play and record..
simple things will drive you mad.

Not if you plan your purchases and use known-compatible hardware and software.

However, there are some versions of Windows that just won't work properly with this kind of stuff, such as Windows Media Center.

One of the reasons I chose SONAR over Pro-Tools, was a friend of mine had
it, up and running, and did our bands demo on it on his computer... so i
got him to come over and help me install the software, the card, get the
lines properly configured from the mixer to the card, get the mixer set
right, get the soundcards control panel set up properly, get the electronic
drums brain to send the proper midi signals (jeeezbus but that was
confusing as all hell)... I sure wouldnt have wanted to do all that by
myself.

In the end there were a few things that didnt behave as I thought they
should, dialog boxes with choices grayed out and stuff like that, I called
the manufacturers and they all said, no, thats how it should be.

several songs recorded and mixed via SONAR at my house at:
