Re: Seperate stomp boxes or Multi Effects Pedal

Many thanks guys. As Tony said I don't want to end up with gimmicky
evil-sounding nonsense. I'll invest in a few good pedels and take it
from there.

Thanks,

Javier

I'm looking to purchase my first pedal and I'm wondering if I should
go with an all in one deal such as Digitechs RP90 or separate stomp
boxes.

Stomp boxes are often analog, the digitech will be all-digital.   There is a
difference, aside from the technology used.

There has to be some cons to buying an all-in-one unit which
runs about the same price as one or two separate effects pedals.

Yes, if you're paying that little, many of the effects and amp models may
not sound that great.    That's not to say that all stomp boxes sound great;
some don't.

Modellers depend on the skill needed and time taken to create the
simulations they offer.   It's not all that simple a task, and you may find
that you got what you paid for.

So, you wind up wishing that you'd just got the one effect with the sound
that you really wanted in the first place, and ended up with a great sound.

That said, I have a POD 2 that I've been very happy with, *except* for its
clean sound.   There's always a bit of harshness and distortion, to the
point that I can't use it for recording clean.

If bite or distortion is needed, or I just want to play around - it's great.
And there's really no other way to run a 100-watt Marshall head set to 10
through an 8" Fender Champ speaker, at least not for more than a hundredth
of a second or so.

As for running a Marshall stack in your apartment at 3AM....  with a
modeller, you're on headphones, and not only do you not get evicted, the
cops don't arrive, and you don't advertise your gear for theft.

Any help is appreciated.

Consider the context you're going to use this in.   If you have an
good-sounding amp and guitar now, just get good-sounding pedals as you can
afford them, and learn how to extract the sounds they offer.   And then,
keep them.

In the long run, you'll probably be happier with this approach, and if you
look around, you'll find that people are often more impressed by one good
tone than a wide variety of so-so or just plain bad tones.
