Re: How important is your guitar's image?

for guitarist for those who desire the instrument itself to be a work
of art and some who just view it as a tool (like a painter would a
paint brush).

Professional grade quality cost a certain amount? What is
"professional", well it's all subjective. Just like one artist may
choose to use 50 cent painbrushes from Walmart while others will go to
an expensive art supply store, it's all subjective. But quality (read:
details) do cost a certain amount and certain brand names can be
trusted to deliver that quality. The step up from say a Fender $150
Fender Squire Stratocaster to a $499 Fender Standard Start is pretty
significant, the way the neck is cut, the quality of the electronics
and tuners. I once heard a salesmen describe one as a "real
instrument" and the other as a "toy". But then you have an group would
say the $499 Standard Starts aren't "real instruments".

The bottom line is there is a cretin cost to quality and beyond that
you're paying for other things (cosmetics, licensing, brand name,
etc...) as a musician the best thing you can do is try out a lot of
different instruments and determine which quality attributes you feel
are worth paying for.

Amen! Also, like with so many arts/crafts, the first 95% is easy, it's the
last 5% that is hard (and expensive). Lots of players are fine with the 95%
range (including me most of the time) but some want, as you stated, the
detail, looks and, yes, brand name. You just know that a Suhr is gonna be a
better guitar, on average, than a Fender. I use what works, but I sure can
appreciate a fine instrument.
