depending on the band, it may bear more resemblance to jazz or
classical music than r'nr. Strictly my opinion, though- which ain't
worth much.
You bring up an interesting little facet of the music biz and one that
I have grown to detest- the attempt to categorize or create new genres
for everything that comes out that's a little faster or rawer or uses
a different production technique- a good example of this is the
different types of metal that can be described- death, industrial,
black, metalcore, grindcore, thrash, gothic, progressive, numetal,
stoner, doom- just a few of the more popular that even have their own
subgenres. I am vaguely aware of the differences, but come on- how
specialized does one have to get? It's strictly marketing- get kids to
think that they're listening to something that's never been done
before- I gave up after black and death metal were being
differentiated- it made no difference to me as I liked both.
classifiy them. To me, there is a huge difference betwween heavy metal,
thrash metal, death metal and black metal. The point where it starts
getting silly is when people start classifying to the point where things
are described as 'technical death metal', 'melancholic black metal' etc.
The most anal I'll go is to differentiate between old school death
metal and new school death metal. Chances are, if the band was formed
after 1993 I won't like it :)- Hide quoted text -

I agree with you to a point and am vaguely aware of the differences- I
have to plead old fart to some of what you're saying, because metal
used to be quite loosely defined and has become quite specific to some
people who only consider Burzum or early Mayhem to be "real" metal
while Black Sabbath is hard rock. When I look at what I like about
metal, it is usually the music made to convey the dark side of human
existence- this is the one uniflying trait that should unite (oh, God-
JP's "United" just came to mind) instead of fragment metal fans.
However, you're right about there being a distinction in sound between
the genres. It's just a little too complex for my tastes. I'm an old
fart, too, so it just annoys me that these young whippersnappers dare
to try to confuse me :).
