My fender monster cable was fine for about a year until it simply went
dead. No signal. Nothing. Yet this other cheap cable that came with my

another monster cable since the signal is better and you get better
range but should I expect these cables to fail and buy new ones every
so often?
like others have said - it usually goes bad at the ends where
you have tension and the cable bending etc.
here's a tip I found useful to extend the life of the cable ends:
get the correct jack ends for the purpose:
either straight or right angle. I have found that using
a right angle jack end going into the amp that plugs in front ways (rather
than from above) really helps to stop all that cable bending/stress
that you get with using a straight end jack.
So one end is straight end for the Strat/Tele and the other is right angle
jack end for the amp. The right angle hangs down so there is no real
cable bending and it alleviates that
straight ended cable sag/bend syndrome that always happens to straight
ends being plugged horizontally into a front mount amp plug.
Of course if your amp sits low then the right angle end might not be the best
way to do it.
Even the shrinkwrapped type of straight ends will stress/bend there.
So maybe use a right angle plug end (if it's appropriate for your amp
and the way it plugs in)
Also - if you have SG or whatever - you might want to use right angle
cable jack instead of straight end jack.
Anyways - use right angle jack end if appropriate and it can
save lots of excess bending in the right situations.
