I have a new head on order (Ceriatone Overtone Special), and am trying
to decide what kind of cab to get. I have narrowed it down to either
a 1x12 or 2x12.
The place I regularly play in mics everything, so really it would just
be for my monitoring on stage.
Also trying to decide between open, partial or closed back. Pop/rock
various cab makers offer 'convertible' back cabs.
there are back panels which can come off to make it
either an open back or closed back cab (depending on
what you want and where you're playing.. etc).
So these convertible back cabs might be something for you
to check out. Obviously there is a difference in sounds from
open back and closed backs. If you don't like the convertible backs
then for all around playing I would suggest the partial closed back cabs
that leave a little bit of open back to let the mids swirl around and
also allow the cab to not be so directional (unless everywhere you
play the audience is neatly staged in front of the band)
But of course this is just my humble opinion on this.
I think someone else also suggested different speakers that
can compliment one another. That's a subjective matter of
how you want to hear your sounds. Matching speakers (same speakers) can
sound as good as a 2x12 using different (but complimentary) speakers.
The main thing is you match up the ohm rating to what your amp wants to see.
Two 16 ohm speakers in the same 2x12 can be wired up as parallel for 8 ohm rating.
Two 8 ohm speakers in the same 2x12 can be wired up in series for 16 ohm
or in parallel for 4 ohm rating. So whatever speakers you choose
get them matched (both 8 ohms or both 16 ohms) and understand how
that will affect your internal cab wiring (parallel or series) and
the final ohm rating for the cab.
Everytime I suggest speakers it seems I suggest Eminence speakers
but that is because I know what they sound like fairly well.
No use suggesting stuff I don't have any personal experience with.
Here's a mix of speakers that would sound great and
would not break the bank to afford. (I use this mix
in a 2x12 setup and find it to work very well for
all sorts of music). Up to you to decide whether you
need both 8 ohm speakers or both 16 ohm speakers.
Speaker 1 = Eminence Swamp Thang
Huge bottom end, warm mids and nice top end.
Never harsh and you can feed as many watts as
you want into this and it won't get harsh or break up.
Solid rhythm tones. And can take mids tweaking nicely.
Awesomely cool speaker. Sounds huge.
Speaker 2 = Celestion Vintage 30 (or clone or variant)
Some nice sounding vintage 30 variants:
Warehouse Guitar Speakers "Veteran 30".
actually both of these 'variants' do not have
the big mid spike that the actual Vintage 30's have
but still retain most of the character of the Vintage 30.
I actually like the WGS and the Mojotone a lot better
but that's all up to your own ear and likes/dislikes.
The Celestion Vintage 30 (or similar) gives the 2x12 a biting
top end and fills in the
mids nicely. The Swamp Thang will take
care of the huge bottom end of things and keep
it all balanced. The Swamp Thang keeps it all together
even under heavy chunking/power chords/ etc.
But when you back off - this 2x12 setup can get chimey,
and still retain lots of cut and presence.
I use it with Fender Strats and Telecaster and
it does everything from country to rock to classic metal
and never lets me down. Works great with various amps too.
(I use mostly 6V6 and 6L6/KT66 powered amps although every
once in a while I'll plug into my friends Marshall JTM 45
and the cab sounds great through this amp which is set up
with EL 34 power tubes).
Whatever you do - I really suggest using the Eminence Swamp Thang
along with whatever other speaker you choose. It is the foundation
sort of speaker that will enhance and fill out and compliment anything else
you put in there.
This is all my very humble opinion(s) and obviously YMMV.
