I have a chord progression that goes:

E / / / D / / / E / / / D / / / / C / / / / I / / / / A / / / I /
/ / /

What would be the most suitable scale i could play over this
progression aside from a chordal type melody?

I have tried F#m over the lot though over the C I would drop the
C# in the scale to play a C natural.

Any other suggestions?

Quickie- Establich the key center as C and play the other 3 chords
as minors

E / / / D / / / E / / / D / / / / C / / / / / / / / / A/ / / / /

Em iii
Dm ii
Em iii
Dm ii
C I
Am vi

Play A natural minor (A aeolian) over it. Keep it simple. If you
want to make it more interesting then switch modes with each chord
change-

Em - E Phrygian
Dm- D Dorian, D pentatonic / blues
C- C major
Am - A relative minor; = A Aeolian

Who knows what the style, tempo, is.

Actually-

If you establish c as the tonal center and play the other chords as
minors, at least mod the chords a hair-

Em7
Dm9
C Maj7 - Try lydian here instead of major-
Am7

It seems to me that what you're doing in both your posts is
suggesting he
use the C Major scale. Why phrase it in such a complex manner? Solos
are
not modes. Modes are a way of analyzing solos. But I know this
argument has
been beaten to death here before, so forgive me for raising it again.

And my personal question to you would be where did you draw the
assumption
that the E and D, and A are minor? He wrote them as Major chords. If
you
strum those chords on your guitar I think you'll see that a song can
be
constructed with all of those chords as Major chords. If I'm not
mistaken,
Sweet Home Alabama was written uing those same major chords (though
1 step
lower). Its 'correct' key and scale have been debated for years (G or
D???). With all due respect, I'd think twice before trying to 'teach'
someone to think so much "in-the-box".

As an aside, I would also like to point out to the OP that that F#m
scale
that he's trying to use is the same as a A Major scale, which
actually can
apply to all those chords, except the C as he's discovered himself.
Perhaps
he hasn't recognized this simple relationship yet in terms of
theory.- Hide quoted text -

You're right, and I have to plead guilty here- I thought that he had
come up with something workable here, but due to my own struggles to
break things down theoretically, I didn't give him any kudos for that,
despite wanting to.

The point I'm getting from your post is that we tend to try to
overcomplicate or overanalyze something to the point where we obscure
the meaning of something very simple. This is something we can all
give ourselves a break on- this is coming from someone who learned
(and continues to learn) by ear, although the theory side has caught
up a little bit.

Mike

We also sometimes try to use theory as a substitute for our ears and our
imagination.  Deciding in advance what notes are "allowed" according to some
preset limits possibilities.  Your ears should be the best judge of what
works and what doesn't ... IMO.  Carl is right .. use theory to explain what
was done and why it worked or didn't work.  Use your mind and your ears to
play.
