rodded humbucker set, does anyone have any experience?
I play a LOT of different styles...
I installed the Jazz/JB set in two of my guitars. An Epiphone Les Paul (slash model) and a 335 knock off. On both guitars, I included four push/pull pots with many different options (split coil, variable split coil, both coils parallel in one p'up, one coil from the neck used with one coil from the bridge, etc...).
I really like this combination, with the following comments.
When played clean, a bridge pickup can sound a bit nasal because you don't have the same amplitude of low frequencies with respect to higher frequencies. The slightly overwound nature of the JB can add to this effect. So when I want a brighter clean tone, I prefer the jazz neck with both coils parallel (essentially two single coils sitting right next to each other). HOWEVER, the JB really shines for overdriven to distorted tones. It has the right drive of the right frequencies to really push a nice tube distortion in my amps.
Another commented that he didn't like the Jazz neck because it was bright. My opinion is that other humbuckers are TOO DARK. And I can always dial down the tone on the Jazz if I want a less bright result. I absolutely LOVE the Jazz neck pickup. It's got to be my favorite passive pickup for the neck. In comparison, Gibson pickups sound DEAD to me. The Jazz just sounds "sweet" with the little bit of added high end.
This is also Seymour's favorite combination, FWIW.
