Question about poly on side of neck.

I have a great guitar that I want to keep. It is a Carvin with poly
finish (I guess all Carvins are). No real problem, but the poly that
is on the side of the fretboard (where binding would be if there was
binding) has popped out in a few places where the fret ends have
popped it out-they are not really sticking out...but I guess just
enough to pop the poly. If you have any Hamer experience, older Hamers
have "Hameritus", this is very similar but the poly is much thicker. I
pulled away some of the hard poly and it comes off..no problem, but it
leaves a divot. What I was thinking about doing was either sanding the
side down and refinishing just that area (I've done that before with
success but not on a poly guitar)...but the thickness might make this
impossible. I was also thinking of taking a razor blade and cutting
down the side (where the finish ends and the side of the ebony board
starts -if that makes any sense.) Has anyone ever run into something
like this or done anything like this before. I'd like to hear some
ideas before I try it.
