G2 is the latest incarnation of Googlegroups.

I have noticed the spaces coming from googlegroups, but
wasn't sure when this started. The spaces breaks the generation of the
Xref line (wherever that originates) and thus breaks my reader's
ability reliably kill cross-posted messages, which greatly annoys me.

Yup. They've been contacted about it by many users, but refuse to do
anything about it. If they can't comply with USENET standards that were in
place before Google was even a pipe dream, *** em.
