No, I'm not excited about *paying* them, but as someone once
said,
it's
inevitable.
I went through a rough cut this evening on my Fed & State tax
returns.
I
had been a bit concerned because my marital status officially
changed
last
year (not for the better), but I had neglected to review or
change
my
tax
withholding.

Anyway, bottom line....I'll be getting enough of a return to
get
that
JMP
MkII 2204 master volume amp I've had my eye on (if I can find
one),
with
enough left over to get a MIA Tele if I have a mind to!

So what "change" did you make that gets you that nice return?
I
need
to
make that change too. :-) Do you think instead of sending the
money
they
would just send gear....I figure they could force a better deal
out
of
somebody. Papa

LOL! I'll take the cash. The "change" wasn't one I was looking
forward
to
(got divorced), but at least I can indulge myself once a year
with
the
tax
return. I usually have them take out more than they need to so
I
get
a
big
refund, but I wasn't sure how that would work out this year. I
was
afraid
I'd have to dig into savings!

OK....I'm not making that change unless she decides something.
Last
year
when my wife got her bonus from work she went out and bought me a
new
Ovation LX 2077. So.....she is a keeper.

Yep, I'll agree there!

However, that idea of having the
gov't. give you something in return does appeal to me. I was just
thinking,
I have to spend a fortune each month on meds I have to take (had a
transplant to save my life three years ago).....so not taking them
isn't
an
option. The government can get them for very, very little
compared
to
what
the market rate is in the US.....so, why not just pay me in
medications
and
I would save enough to buy a whole bunch of
guitars........Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

That's a great idea, Carl!

I'm serious about this.....this country has become a nightmare if you
ever
get seriously sick. I'm doing pretty good now, but everyday I spend
at
least an hour working on stuff related to medical bills....making
sure
that
my Rx plan is getting things right....it is a huge mess. The
government
could save a lot of money by just giving me something I really need
instead
of the money that is owed me in my tax return....and that in return
would
allow me to save money....it is a win / win situation. Of course,
some
fool
will call it socialized medicine or something. As far as marrigage
goes,
that is the only thing in my life I've ever done right...or I should
say,
she did right in the area of putting up with me.....I've been married
for
almost 39 years. The docs told me that she kept me alive long enough
for
them to give me two transplants, liver and a kidney......we met at a
party
in Greenwich Village in '69. Two hippies that got married a couple
of
weeks
after we met.....people told us that a "rock 'n roll" lifestyle
wouldn't
last.....man, were they wrong. I've changed jobs a lot, professions,
in
and
out of music...change change change....but she was the constant. She
loves
music too. I'm going to send my idea to my Senators and Congressman.
Peace, Papa

Wow...Papa! We have some things in common. My medical problems were
in
2004, bad...but not on the level of yours for sure. I hope you're
doing as well as I am these days. For me it was more like 1976 or 77.
I was a little late for the Hippie thing. I met my wife in The
Bronx,
but I was playing all over Greenwich Village at the time, and
basically we were there all the time. She was all of 15 at the time,
and we are now married 26 years. She handles ordering all my
prescriptions, etc. which is part time job to go along with her real
full time job.I am generally fairly conservative politically, but I
have always (even before my medical problems) felt that all Americans
should have health care (at least all legal Americans). I don't know
if the government should run it, but I do know it is necessary and
there has to be a way that this Great Country can do it. I'd vote for
any candidate from either party if I felt they would truly be able to
do it.

I'm with you on that, the candidate who truly will create healthcare
for
all. As I see this mess the way it is going now is, they take our
money
in
taxes, then they turn over the taxes to a private company to administer
healthcare (Medicaid and Medicare).....of course, a lot of people don't
even
get that and they are really screwed. But still....the company that
gets
the money to administer a "plan" is in it to make money....by the time
the
drug gets to the consumer the price has gotten many, many
"bumps"......The
Federal Govt. in the Veterans System and the Prison System has a huge
vehicle to purchase drugs at a fair price......that same process should
be
part of the program that could provide it to everyone. When you look,
and
I've really studied this, at the money that lobbyists give to
politicians
of
all types to keep this insurance system in place it is
astounding......so
called "managed care" is not a healthcare system....it is a business
scheme
for corporations to make money, not to provide healthcare. They make
money
by limiting the healthcare. I had my transplants in 2004 (9/24) and
had
had
several abdominal surgeries before that. The result was I wound up
with
some very serious incisional hernias about a year after
transplant.......but, the insurance company said they were not life
threatening...no matter what the doctors said or did, and they did
everything. I couldn't work at all, couldn't even really do much at
all
physically....I'm talking serious stuff here. Finally, after a series
of
ER
visits to resolve hernias in trouble....the insurance company decided
to
allow the surgery, but now it was so bad, it took a team of specialists
to
do it. This could all have been prevented by fixing the problem when
it
appeared. This is just one example of stuff I have first hand
knowledge
of.
I can't say I'm a true liberal either...nor a conservative...maybe a
libertarian at times......but I damn well know that we need a universal
healthcare plan in this country. The best countries to be in if you
need
a
transplant are Spain, Italy, and France.....how can we not even figure
in
that mix.....I've seen situations in the last three years that make
tears
come to your eyes. I've seen mothers wanting to donate a kidney to a
teenager who desperately needs it....but the insurance won't pay for
the
"harvesting" operation on the mother. At the Hosp. of the U. of
Penn....the
docs just do it and take the hit....but the stories go on and on. We
lost
almost everything we had. But, I'm alive and happy. Hey, I spent a
LOT
of
time in the Village around '76. What was your favorite music hang out?
Papa

In 76 (to the best of my knowledge) I hung out at Copperfirelds on
8th Street a lot...we started playing there on our regular Tuesday
nites in 77 I think. Met David Peel there...started playing with him
some (still thought I might get lucky and meet John Lennon). Played at
a place called ...damn can't rememeber the name...he was a regular
there...on Bleeker Street near Washington Square Park...maybe Mills
Tavern? Hung out at the park a lot too. Hung out a CBGB,s some (not
my main hang out) and also Max's Kansas City sometimes. But mainly
Copperfields near Electric Ladyland. There was a record store on the
corner...the owner was the manager of Television so I got to meet and
hang out with them some. Played with The Shirts (with Annie Golden who
was later in Hair and on TV some)...of course hung out at 48th Street
as much as possible. At least those are the parts I remember....seems
a little fuzzy these days...can't imagine why that would be :-)
As far as the health care...I agree with much of what you said. The
fact that insurance won't pay when the mother was willing to donate
her own kidney to save her child is just a crime...and it's been this
way with both Dems and Rebublicans no matter what spin both parties
put on it. I lean towards Republican/Libertarian, but I am truly
independent and will vote for the best candidate. I honestly have not
made up my mind for this next election...and from the looks of it I
won't until the last minute. What bothered me from a personal
standpoint was the lack of support AFTER I came home from the
hospital. I had a harder time then than I did in the hopistal and
there was no one to help. My wife did what she could but she went back
to work (her job has the healthcare!) I was truly a mess. The first
couple of weeks were horrible...as glad as I was to be home and
alive...I would have been much better off in the Hospital for a bit
longer...but of course they want you out ASAP...too expensive to keep
you there. Something has to be done!

I can remember being on Bleeker a lot on Saturday nights. What was Terra
Blues before that name came in? There also was a place called
Jaques....or
Jaque Sandoleskews or something like that......they had this drink called
the "wipeout".....I remember that. As you, a lot of that is very blurry
now. And at that point I was already past the hippie days, and working
in a
hospital near White Plains. I do remember going to Copperfields, but not
sure how much. I have trouble because the names of places changed, and I
still went there and can't remember which was which and when. I know the
ones we always hung in, The Gaslight and Cafe Wha?.......I know that even
after Wha changed we used to go back there. I was actually there in Aug.
67
when Hendrix made an appearance opening for Richie Havens. Then in '69 I
got married and got a little more serious.....moved to just outside the
City
and worked in a children's hospital as a counselor. One of my coworkers
was
a serious bass player whose brother played with the band "Stories" and
later
Lou Reed...that would have been around the time you are talking about I
think, maybe a little earlier. We used to go into the City a lot then.
After that, in late '78 I moved to Jersey and got totally away from music
for a long time.
You are right about the "after" care part. When you have a transplant,
you
have to go back to the hospital a lot, couple times a week at
first....and
thank God a good friend of mine who is retired helped out with that, but
my
wife, a nurse, had to do almost everything while she was still working
full
time. She actually had to take a job as a visiting nurse so she could
have
flexible hours to be able to come by the house to help me. I have close
friends from Spain, and they actually go back to Spain for some medical
care. It is getting like that way too much now. Of all of my current
doctors, and some really good ones, NONE of them are from this
country...so
what does that mean? We are in a mess. And as someone who worked in the
system, and whose wife has always been in healthcare, the workers aren't
making any money either.....I think it is all the insurance and drug
industry. Peace, Would still love to have enough money to go retire in
the
Village. Papa

I think the village may not be my cup of tea anymore. I have not been
back to the village for many years even though I am only about 60
miles away. I get into the city once or twice a year. I really have to
make a point to get down there. Copperfields was an old club of a
different name, but I don't have a clue which one it was. I remember
writing in the bathrooms that went back to the 50's. It was in a
basement under the record store. I think it closed for good without
changing names..not sure if I could even find it today but I want to
one day. Where did you work near White Plains? I used to get up there
a lot too. In fact I worked in Hawthorne and owned a record store in
Pleasantiville, NY in 1980. I remember a custom guitar shop in White
Plains...Juliano's who made some fantastic guitars (across the street
from Lyric High Fi. They had an all rosewood tele with an ebony board,
neck thru construction that I never forgot...but couldn't afford
either. My wife also works in healthcare...billing...so she knows all
the ins and outs of the industry...which sometimes helps a lot. It's
great to be alive, but some things could be so much better! I'm
waiting for a candidate to say "change" and really mean it.

We lived in Hartsdale and worked at Blythedale Children's Hospital. Both my
wife an I worked there.
We were there from '73 to '78. That was a very cool period too, the music
wasn't as good as the earlier days
but we did do a lot of cool things. Another friend's father lived in The
Dakota....we used to beg him to go visit when we were
all in the City together, which wasn't that often...he didn't hang that much
with the rest of us. During the disco days I got into more folk /
outlaw country / and jazz and used to go to some of those jazz clubs on the
West Side uptown. When I go to the Village today it is usually
to go to Terra Blues. Since my wife and I met there, we do go back every
once in a while and trace our footsteps. We "fell in love" in Washington
Square
Park.....and actually met at a party in McDougal Alley, which you can't even
walk into today. Terra Blues is still a good place to hear music that
sort of reminds me of the old days. Some night I'm going back to Cafe Wha?
just to "feel" it. Good memories. Stay well. Papa
