And I must get around to windows server technology someday, I guess the
first thing to investigate is security. something ultimately DOS based
without file permissions is sounding scarry already, though SQlserver
gets a good rap and is better supported than postgres.
MSSQL server getting a good wrap? By whom? MCSE people? I refer to MCSEs
as Must Consult Someone Else.
I actually had a brief look at the MCSE course. First book is useful then
the rest is mostly networking, much of which is common sense and covered by
CISO anyway. Noit intreested in MCSE from an admin perspective What I would
basicaly want to get out of it is a better understandiing of running
networked applications, porting and security. Should have a deeper look
particulary from a security point of view, but security is probably another
$3K course as well. Geez, when I was at Uni cobol was a core subject and
networking consisted of an understanding of asynchronous and synchronous
transmissions, the seven layered ISO model and a brief mention of TCP/IP.
Token rings were cool.
Not much hard about Postgres.
Possibly not, no, I mean it is a RDBMS that handles a distributed
environment and is scalable, I'm not a database administrator by any means
but there's not much about relational database analysis and design that gets
past me, IMS too for that matter. it would obviously have rollback, backup,
snapshot, authentication and authorization procedures using Linux's
encyption facilites and integrate with any of the Linux GUI application
interface packages there like X windows, (comparable to SQLServer and VB)
either way you have to deal with root classes, frames and windows etc when
writing GUIs
I have a distro disk with Postrgres on it, I should have a good look at it
as well. No doubt it would be Perl, Bash or PHP friendly. The thing I like
with linux is it takes a mere shell script to use it's operating system's
facilities, order jobs etc. Not sure if windows has anything similar to
cron.
But support is another thing.
Everything you need to know is on teh google.
It's far less convaluted than that over bloated POS referred to in the
last sentence.
Pobably true but there are more LANS out there runing Windows servers than
Linux, not saying that's a better choice but just the way it is. Dunno about
web servers and Linux, windows seems to be catching up to the mysql/php
paradigm with .NET but for business applications Windows has the market, and
if you go in and offer a business a choice most will want windows. I have a
friend who has a group of clients all running Linux and he keeps them happy,
but has the burdon of ongoing support for any application he builds. Nice if
you like the support dollar, time consuming if you are an applications
programmer.
I seriously think you should avoid oxymorons like "Windows Server
Technology" as well.
one thing that struck me as very odd when I heard it was, that server
passwords aren't encrypted in Windows (this was NT don't know if that's
changed).
hehe,... and I did say...
