I'd run Ubuntu or SUSE before I touched any of that Microsoft shit.
Then again, I don't have to worry - I'm running MacOS 10.5.1 (Leopard)
very happily - on an old PPC PowerMac which shipped in *2002*.

I guess it's a good place to repost my latest trial of Ubuntu a few months
back on 2 of my machines...here's what went down.
(I really think Linuxes are GREAT but only for people who do next to nothing
on their computers, i.e. write, surf, do some photos or whatever. Not for us
who use 'em for everything from home and kids entertainment to sound and
video prodution. I'll consider building a Linux box when they start porting
the newest games for it as well as windows. Gotta get a game a month because
all work and no play makes Dee a sad boy.)

Boot up...WFT? Monitor out of range...OK so it doesn't recognize my
Viewsonic VA902TFT. Well another monitor, I tell it it's 1280x1024
flatscreen (no driver) and it says I need to restart. WTF2?

Well before I do that, I quickly check it otherwise with this other monitor.

No network? Won't recognize either my WLAN system or the integrated Marvell
1G ethernet. It shows the eth0 there but it won't connect anywhere. I tell
it to use DHCP, manual config...and there's just a blank white window. Seems
like a crash. Nothing. Oh well. Try the laptop.

With the laptop I took a li'l more time.

First impression: the mouse won't work. Or the touchpad does, but not the
main mouse (keyboard 'knob' mouse). Normally I only use it and disable the
touchpad. Well this moves sllloooooowwwwly and the klicking doesn't work.

Guess what? There are good controls for the touchpad (except disable) but NO
controls for the knob one.

Oh well. Time to move on.
There was a loooong series of trying to get to net - I won't bore you but I
tried cable modem w/auto dhcp no go, WLAN...it finds my AP and sees the ssid
and all...gets an address from the web...seems to send and receive...but I
can't get it to load any web pages or access the web via synaptic or
anything else either. DAMN. Even rebooted and tried with a land line; no go.

Then it's time to test the modem...plug in the USB...nothing. Isn't
detected. I try to find any USB devices...another long story.

WELL then I wonder where's the sound---seems that in Linux I can only use
headphones. It won't play on speakers. Also when I install my USB-powered
speakers I use at work for presentation sound...noooo sound to speak of,
just a whisper, and all voumes are at full.

I try my USB soundcard and lo and behold, that works OK. But I need to
manually go and enable all sounds I want played thru there.

Anyway now it says I must restart...which I do. Or shutdown. Later I
reboot...hmm...gives just colourful stripes and tilts there. Won't load or
anything. I can see the mouse pointer thru the lines. Yep it's crashed.

I realize it's the USB things---I rip them off and reboot and now it works.
As much as it works...I spend another hour trying to get the network to
work, but no luck. It stays dead, although Active Connection Information
says:

Interface: Wired Ethernet (eth0) speed 100Mb/s
Driver sky2
Ip address 192.168...seems OK but no go.

It even sees my DNS servers, the ISP's info is found...seems to fetch some
data but NO access or system downloads. I can't understand why. Also WLAN
works; asks for passphrases...but no access to the Internet.

Not that I would much need it with no mouse or working sounds...pretty
typical Linux experience for me. 2 machines and neither manages to work even
'about right' in most anything.
