Re: interesting new amp from Traynor

Oooh. It even has tube rectifier emulation. If a tube rectifier wasnt important to an amps sound and feel then why would they advertise their trying to emulate one? Which they cant convincingly.

Tube rectifiers can and do affect tone, but the degree of effect depends on the actual rectifier tube being used, voltages, values of filter caps, and current draw of the amp circuit.

If you want a punchy amp, you do NOT want rectifiers. If you want an amp that has more compression and less hard distortion on dynamics, you might want a rectifier tube.

Generally speaking, rectifier tubes lower the voltage, and the power reserve available for instant output from the power supply. Hit a hard note, and you can overtax the available power in the power supply, which can cause a voltage drop and compress the amp by putting out less power and a different distortion.

SS diodes, on the other hand, do not have noticeable voltage drop and do not contribute to compression. If they have decent filtration, hit a hard note and you'll get a punchy response (distorted if you are out of clean headroom).

Despite what Keith says, there are solid state devices that are intended to behave similar to a rectifier tube. Here's one: http://www.webervst.com/ccap.html

Traynor YCS50 (it is not the same as the YCV50 blue)
looks interesting - seems more manufacturers
are offering various preamp voicings and also offering
choice of class AB and lower wattage class A within the same amp (ala Mesa Express series)

just keeping abreast of new stuff and gear out there.

i'll have to actually see if any stores have these yet
so I can plug in and check it out.
