Tell you what. Give me some more detail on exactly how you're playing
and
what you're using. I assume from what you've said that you play
fingerstyle
with your slide. If so, with your fingertips or with finger picks?
What
guitar do you use? Pickups? (single-coil, humbuckers, P-90s). I've
got
a
lot of guitars here, and I could probably come up with one that'll come
close to matching your choice. (exception -- no actives, but if you
give
me
an approximate passive equivalent, I'll try to match it). Then I'll
fool
around with a bunch of my pedals and try to get close to what I think
you're
looking for.

If I get anything constructive out of it, I'll record it and post it.
Warning: my slide playing isn't the world's greatest :-)

Asking me about gear? Gawd, you must be a devil for punishment.

I still consider myself very much a learner where electric are concerned,
though from 40-odd years of playing acoustic, I know what I like. One of
the
many things I don't know is how well I fit into a band situation.

OK, I play fingerstyle slide, currently in open tuning on the electric,
using my nails and 13-56 strings. My favourite pickups are GFS Brooklyns,
hum-sized single coils of fairly low output. I think of them as P90-ish. I
also like SD Jazz, which are SD's brightest standard humbuckers and GFS
Memphis, which is a low output Gretsch-type alnico II humbucker, both
these
two with the tone wound off a bit. I tried a tele and various standard
strats, and wasn't wild about them, hot humbuckers (anything much more
than
PAF resistance) mostly sound like mud to me. I do use active tone controls
on a couple of guitars, it seems to add a transparency, like a digital pic
compared with an analog one. The amps are an Epi VJ, a Fender Blues Deluxe
and a H&K 20w Statesman. The BD is my gig amp. I generally have the amp
set
clean, or use very light OD. Current pedals are a very good Ross/Dynacomp
style compressor, a BD-2 used as a boost, an SD-1 and an Ibanez DE-7
echo/delay. I use them all **very lightly**.

If you can get me a saxophone, or even a trombone, I'll be very happy.

OK, thanks Tony, that helps me narrow things down a little bit. Here's what
I'll try:

Guitars: Gretsch Tennessean, with TV Jones Classic pickups (low-output
humbuckers). These are alnico, but I'm not sure if they're alnico II. I'll
also try my custom guitar with Lindy Fralin P-92s (3 P-90-like pickups).

Amps: Epi VJ and Fender Blues Jr., which I'm assuming is a half-decent
approximation to the Blues Deluxe. I also have a Fender Twin, which I think
is pretty difficult to drive into the territory you want without ruining my
ears.

I tend to play slide mostly with my fingertips (not nails). This might be
better than using nails to try to get the softer attack associated with wind
instruments.
