This might sound like a dumb question.....

I play a standard Stratocaster, and my most-used sound is the one I get

sound).

If I bought a Strat with the S1 switching, would I still be able to get
this
exact sound?

If yes, where exactly does this sound exist?

that's an extremely secret sound you are getting.
the 'secret' sound actually comes from the older 3 way switch (and
reissues
of older models that retain the 3 way switch).
In the older 3 way pup switch you got 'secret' sounds by placing the
switch where the modern switches today would be positions 2 and 4.

In a 5 way switch there really is not any 'secret' sounds between 4 and 5
or 1 and 2 or between any of them. Of course there is no telling about
how your wiring is done and you might simply be making a connection due
to custom wiring or something strange going on inside your Strat.

The only thing the S1 switching on an American Strat does not get you
is the neck + bridge (which is a shame since mathematically there are
10 possible choices - 5 way switch with S1 up and S1 down = 10 positions).
However - position 5 (neck only) is a duplicate (choose 5/neck pup only
and push the
S1 up and down and it's all the same). For some reason Fender decided to
not use that 'unused' 10th selection to have bridge and neck together.
This is a big caveat with the S1 although a good luthier or tech can
actually wire that in for you (bridge + neck).
I am not sure why Fender sat on their thumbs and did not have
the S1 automatically include this neck+bridge within the S1's selection
settings.
Almost unforgivable for them to leave this out.

Anyways - like I said - on a standard 5 way switch if you have found
some magic mojo 'secret' selection ocurring between the 5 way selections
then do not open your Strat or you will most certainly ruin the magic that
is happening under the pickguard.

I wonder if anyone could check this out with a scope/multimeter? I realise
that position 5 is the bridge pup, and position 4 is the bridge and middle
pups. But....'when the switch is moved to the area between the 4th and 5th
position, there is a definite change in the sound. You can't miss it. What
difference could this postion be making to the wiring in a standard USA
strat? Is it something simple, like the neck pup coming in? Or something
more complex like reactance issues?
Something is definetely different. I would like to know more.

Joe.
