For me it was a couple of months back.

Dinosaur Jr played a bar (which we happened to play on the weekend just
past). Not a big venue by any stretch, maybe 250-300 people were there.
They brought enough (and then some) amplification for an outdoor/arena
rock show. 2 /full/ stacks either side of the stage and the worst
harsh, brittle and piercing guitar tone you've ever heard. Had to stand
right at the back of the place to get away from it.

Ugghh- that guy plays way too loud from what little I've heard of his
live stuff- that's painful when you get a guy with just piercing tone
at ear-splitting sound pressure levels. That's about as bad as it
gets. Every live mix I've heard of DJ sounded like turd- not that I've
heard a lot- maybe he's deaf- he wouldn't be the only one.

I can't imagine him having much in the way of hearing left. It was bearable and sounded a lot better at the back of the room, but I felt *something* give in my left ear during the first song (I was 15 feet away from his guitar rig at that stage.

An honourable mention also goes to MOGWAI, who did a 'wall of noise' set-closer type thing for 10-12 minutes when they played a gig with Trail of Dead at the Metro in Sydney a few years back. My friend had a dB meter and measured them at 125dB for 10 minutes solid. My ears rang for days.
