Jim, I saw the following ad on the DC area craigslist:

Good deal or no? I'm considering asking if he'll sell the head
separately.
I assume this is the "good" version of the 2204. Any questions I should
ask
or things I should look for that would tag it as genuine and/or
distinguish
sub-models? Thanks!

If it is what he says it is, it's a deal. GOOD deal? Depends on what
you can find at this point in time in similar condition. They are
getting harder to find. ESPECIALLY in mint condition. ESPECIALLY with
matching cab. If his idea of "mint" matches mine, it's a very fair
price. If he's the original buyer and still has the receipt (I have
mine), it's that much more attractive.

Ask if he's the original owner. If not, everything he says should be
taken with a grain of salt.

Ask about maintenance history, and any receipts. Ask about the filter
caps and bias cap. If they are original, they should be replaced. I
changed mine out a couple years ago. They had not yet gone bad, but it
was only a matter of time.

You should ask age and brand of all of the tubes in it. These shipped
with GE 6550A output tubes. Most of them now have EL34. If it's bone
stock, it'll still have GE 6550A in it. And probably Tungsram preamp
tubes (that's what my 1980 model shipped with).

If it's got 6550 or EL34 without the proper bias mod, that's a SIMPLE
mod that any competent tech can handle. Don't let a bit of harsh
distortion kill the deal, if he says it hasn't been modified and it does
have EL34 outputs.

Ask why he's selling. It could be that it doesn't have the proper bias
adjustment so it sounds rough, or the filter caps are going south, and
seller thinks he's avoiding a repair bill. Or, he just figured out how
much they're going for, and wants to convert it to cash.

If you've got the money, it ought to be a great rig that will do nothing
but appreciate in value. I wouldn't sell my head for $1500, although I
think you could buy one for that if you shopped around. I'd say
consider making an offer on only the head, but this guy won't want to
split the set. And collectors value to buyer might make it worth buying
as a set, even if you don't really need the cab. The thing is, once you
buy it, you'll never want to sell! ...so the matching cab becomes less
of an issue (to me, at least). It *will* look cool, and you can always
swap the drivers.

If you can swing/justify an actual purchase, you owe it to yourself to
check it out! If you do, be sure to REPORT BACK!

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the input. I haven't been able to find the 2204
anywhere in these parts (been looking for a couple of months now).

One thing that makes me a little wary is that he'll only accept a cashier's
check or money order.

BTW, I seem to recall you posting pics of yours a while back. If you still
have them up, can you post a link? I'd like to see what the real thing is
supposed to look like!
