The front end of a Music Man is SS. Thats doesnt bother me though because if
you've got to use SS thats the only place to put it.. I've never used 6L6's
in mine but have 6CA7's and EL34's. The 12AX7 you see is a phase inverter
only. Mine has it but they only used it on the first year or two(at most)
They can get a real pretty clean tone and overdrive like hell if you like SS
preamp distortion? All in all I'd recommend any model of MM
to anybody. The build quality inside the chassis( and cabinet for that
matter) is immaculate. The circuit board more resembles a tag board . If you
want to repair or modify a C.B. amp then thats probably the one.
The weight of their transformers will make the head as heavy(if not
heavier) than a PR complete. The MM amps I'm thinking of were built during
the time of L.Fenders stint with MM but he had absolutely nothing to do
with their design or construction.

Well I tried the Classic 30 on Friday, with both of my Strats. It was
nice, but noisy as hell. Well maybe not that noisy, but noisy enough to
shit me. I don't recall the brand new one I tried being that bad (or am I
being too picky?). This one is a few years old. Been well looked after,
tubes replaced and serviced. Still dubious about it getting over a drummer
clean too.
Am I missing something? Is it much to ask for the perfect amp that doesn't
cost a small fortune?
Here's what I want in an amp,
1) I'd prefer valves (tho if it takes SS to achieve, I don't really care,
as long as it does the trick and sounds good).
2) Clean at decent over drums volume
3) Nice Fendery type chime, Twins sound fantastic imo. Still so does the
Bassman but for different reasons.
4) No (major) noticeable noise when plugged in clean (shit the VJ does it
fine, so its gotta be possible).
5) No bells and whistles, effects etc. I don't need em. I got pedals I
love and they cover a huge spectrum.
6) Switchable gain stage (tho not necessarily a big issue as the Tube
screamer helps here).
7) Effects loop would be nice but not a big concern.
8) Reverb would also be nice but not a priority.
So I guess its back to square one..... sigh.
Let the hunt continue. Thoughts?
Mark
