Man that's painful on many levels. Why didn't he just shift a semitone
or switch that midi crap off? Gimme a stomp box any day.

If the problem was an error in sampling rate (which most people suspect),
using 48 kHz instead of 44.1 kHz, then the pitch would be off by more than a
semitone but less than a full tone. IIRC, from watching the vid the first
time (I don't want to subject myself to that again!), EVH tried to go up a
half-tone but it still sounded like crap. And the synth is essential to the
song, no way they could have switched it off. The thing I would have done
is killed the song, gone to the next one in the set, and made some kind of
joke to the audience about "technical difficulties".
