Lady I met told a story about meeting him and sort of having to work

he was an absolute mess.

Yea, but that's after everyone made him crazy... Record companies,
groupies, everyone wanting him to play purple haze with his teeth,
people feeding him with free drugs non stop. etc, etc..
It can be hell to be a world famous rocker at times..
He had at least one nervous breakdown before he died. He even
thought so himself, and said so..
One was when he went totally ballistic in a hotel room..
His last days were in kind of a funk. He wanted to be in the studio,
but he had to hit the road to pay the bills for it..
As an example, I always thought he was in a fairly crappy mood
at Isle of Wight.. And he had to start real late too.. About 2-3 AM..
I'd almost wager to say that if he had stayed in the studio instead
of hitting that last tour, he might well still be here.
I forgot the exact time line though.. Seems he died not too long after
Isle of Wight, but I fergot..

Well, I think he was the greatest, but let's be real, no one forced
the drugs into his body. Near the end he had an entourage that
leeched off him. Takes balls to tell friends "hit the road, I need to
work". He wasn't saying that near the end. It can be hell at times
in any profession, as the old saying goes, "when the going gets tough,
the tough get going". Some don't get going, they lose control.
