Re: OT: LInux stuff again

What's wrong with Ubuntu etc. linuxes?

- Not compatible with large systems like Win2003 servers, Novell etc; can't really be used in large networks, doesn't have proper administration of workstations in larger scale (this is what out techies say; the company is running literally thousands of machines and a horde of prorgrams over network and remote access to servers etc...they say even attempting a dozen computers with Linux is a laugh - not meant for serious business use at all.

Don't get out much do you. Nor do your techies but then they prefer WIndows servers? Laughable. I can affirm that I administer lots of Linux servers within the company I work for and they *** all over Windows. Hands down baby. This is a known fact that lInux creams in the server market. If your techie guys are just windows monkeys then you guys have problems... either that or are an exceedingly wealthy corporation who are more than willing to throw money out the window on sub-standard engineering. Hey, their choice but they really shouldn't be commenting on things they have only a basic understanding about or none at all.

- Not compatible with a lot of hardware (personally about 50% of my devices work; even those labeled Linux compatible fail miserably or offer only partial support)

- Not compatible with most any cellular and PDA systems when it comes to synchronizing etc, navigation, corporate messaging services etc.

- Despite stable and 'safe' it's easy to screw up the entire system by just doing something like trying to get a soundcard to work (personally e.g. tried to install stuff past Synaptic and pretty soon the whole system crashed personally)

Sure, anything is easy to *** up if you take the liberty to screw with config files when you haven't done the leg work by trying to understand what it is you are trying to do. Crikey, you can even screw windows over with half the amount of knowledge if you really wanted to... knowing how stable it is 'n' all.

- Hard to incorporate with systems using NTFS etc. filesystems

Pfft...
Attach the appropriate repositories and:
sudo apt-get install ntfs-config

Linux has come a long way despite the hurdles Microsoft likes to put in the way.

- Almost everything besides adding very basic programs has to be done in console with very steep learning curve commands, and locally...a nightmare for people responsible for maintenance

??

- Almost nonexistant offering for many extremely key applications, albeit OOffice etc. do offer a lot for small businesses and home users

- No games/entertainment available to speak of, no proper 3D support in most cases etc. etc.

Jesus. So the fact that I'm running Doom3 and Quake3 installed with the pak files from my windows cd's and by running the doom3-linux-1.3.1302.x86.run installer makes it impossible and without 3D support? FFS.

- Pretty poor sound and video program offering as well.

Err... sorry but you're very without clue right here.

But it's a great OS for those who only need to surf the web, write some documents and occasional digital photos etc...I'd recommend it for many home users just based on its stability in basic use and safety against viruses...but for any other than basic use...not a chance. I could not find Linux equivalents for over half the programs I need at all.

So run VMWare. Whats the drama? I'd rather run a virtual windows session on top of linux and enjoy the stability than hope and prey windows copes. Of course, YMMV.
