Re: My first Variax. I finally see what the fuss is all about

I think your best bet is to adjust your patches for level during
rehearsal with the band and not just cranked up. You can rough it in
when playing loudly by yourself but it still won't tell you how it
will work out in a mix.

Tried messing with settings during rehearsal last night but found it
impossible to do it systematically without holding everyone up. So
here's another idea .. maybe play a carefully chosen selection of rock
through our PA cranked up in the band room and then adjust patch
levels on the POD to be audible against that backdrop for all patches
in sequence. Obviously I'd have to avoid recordings that put a lot of
guitar in the same frequency space.

What's probably throwing you is that each amp model (and each patch) has a default output volume. I had to go back and level the output volume on all my patches, and then step through them to make sure that as I changed patches my master volume was really still at my amp.

....and most annoyingly, I find I need to do this every time I set up and tear down, or switch guitars. Very hard to get the XTL to unity so it's neutral to your amp from setup to setup...hence my previous comments about my "love-hate-hate" relationship with mine...but I'm going to keep trying with it for the time being.
