For what it's worth Andy, that's some of the most interesting and well
executed music I've heard posted here. It's reminiscent of Ryan Adams
(not derivative mind you), and to me .... yes it does lend a good deal
of validity to your posts. I now know that Andy plays in a band that
performs music that I personally relate to and enjoy. His tastes are
similar to mine, his musicianship is of a caliber that I feel is
superior to 99% of the other posters I've heard here, and he displays
a passion for what he does that will lend further credence to any
future postings from him.

Does that sound elitist? Maybe it is, but when I can hear or see that
someone who posts here actually brings a modicum of talent to the
table, it increases my respect for that person's opinions
exponentially. Especially when that person's opinions are related to
performance and musicianship, and not to matters technical (since I no
nothing about that subject at all). This just serves to make you a
more interesting and relateable personality to me. Is that really so
bad?

Well, thanks for the kind words (and I'm glad the mention was of Ryan
Adams, not BRyan...)

I do actually see (and can totally understand) your point - I just think
we have a different take on it however - for me, if someone can express
their opinions in a well reasoned way and take on other people's point
of view, that's enough for me. Keith hasn't done either IMHO. I don't
particularly care what anyone plays or how they play it, everyone's
opinion on 'good tone' is subjective, after all.

What I would hate to see happen here is a cliquey, elitist group form
that discourages new posters from contributing. You need look no
further than alt.guitar.amps to see just how fucking awful a newsgroup
can get. The fact it, someone can post here asking even the most
'newbie' of questions and he'll get 15-20 _really helpful_ responses
within a couple of days rather than the 'this has been done to death,
just f'king Google it' type answers so prevalent on other groups. I'd
suggest leaving the 'put up or shut up' requests to the elite
self-important jazz groups rather than here. Quite frankly I find it
cringe-worthy and it leaves an air of intimidation for any lurkers who
are still deciding whether or not they want to contribute to the group.

Basically, if Keith wants to fling *** around at us other monkeys in
the cage, he'd better be able to receive the same in kind. He's on
numerous occasions taken cheap shots at other regular posters and their
advice (Repair Guy, Jim, Twang etc just off the top of my head) for no
good reason other than to (and I can only assume here) stir the pot.

There's a fine line between trolling and abuse however. The threats
against Meat Plow cross that line by a considerable margin AFAIC.

And yes, I *am* as guilty as anyone else of getting hot-headed in here
from time to time, but I've never resorted to nonsense like that.

Anyway, it's time for me to get off the soapbox methinks. I hope this
makes some sense, I've been unable to sleep since 4AM.

Good post, Andy. I've been wanting to say something along similar lines,
but I didn't want to start a flame war. But (and now addressing Lewis),
I'll agree that some of what Lewis said smacks of elitism to me. I can't
say (not being able to get inside Lewis' head) whether that was the intent
or not, or whether there was humor intended that escaped me. This is an
excellent newsgroup, better than any other that I read. And it's because
it's formed by participants with a wide variety of backgrounds, some pros,
some semi-pros, some amateurs (not using that derogatively; if you count the
last 38 years only, I fit), and some luthiers, techs, etc.

Beyond the occasional flames (which are minimal, really) it works because of
a mutual respect among all these people. We tend not to accept posts from
some as being more "valid" than others simply based on playing ability or,
say, national reputation as a luthier. Rather, the acceptance is based on
giving the benefit of the doubt, unless by prior history a given poster has
shown himself to be a jackass. Fortunately, in this NG, those are few and
far between. Andy, this is what I meant earlier when I mentioned "cred"; I
meant not as a player but as a NG participant. Anyway, let's continue to
try to keep it friendly.- Hide quoted text -

Hey Rich...

I heartily agree with both yours and Andy's comments. The majority of
contributors to this N/G are bright, well informed, well intentioned,
and reasonable people. But let's not forget what actually started this
particular thread... that being a purposefully insulting photo aimed
in ridicule at Keith. Again, I am not a Keith apologist. That I like
him and get along well with him is beside the point.

While I readily admit to a certain degree of elitism, it's not
something that is generally a part of my on line persona. On the other
hand, when I'm challenged I have no problem calling someone out. If
during the course of an exchange of that type I come off as a bit
"uppity", please keep in mind that it's no worse a defense mechanism
than name calling, sniping, or posting stupid photos meant to belittle
someone. One need only search this groups archives to get a good sense
of the level of participation on my part. I participate when I feel
that my area of expertise or experience can shed some light on a
particular subject. And sometimes when someone says something that I
find misleading or just plain stupid. I don't pretend to be the
ultimate arbiter of taste and common sense, I know my place in the
pecking order, I know what I know, and I don't know what I don't know
(can't believe that HBO took "John from Cincinnati" off the air).

I really hope that this clears the air a little. I've been a
contributor here for about 4 or 5 years now, and have never had this
level of vitriol hurled at me (save for my exchanges with "he whose
name shall not be mentioned"). I'd like to keep my relations here at
the least civil. I just ain't a bad guy...

Later 'gates,

Lewis
