Well... the writing was on the wall for about the last 3 months or so,
and Friday my company "let me go" as they are phasing out the
particular work in which my field of expertise lies. I wasn't
particularly surprised, but it did kinda piss me off that I got such a
cheezy separation package. Whatever...
I've been looking to get out of this type of work for a while now (I
deal with environmental issues as they relate to disaster
restoration... floods, asbestos, fire damage etc). So I'm just dickin'
around on Career Builder and lo and behold there's a posting for a
Logistics Coordinator at Fender's corporate headquarters here in
Scottsdale, AZ. I had about 8 or 9 years in with Hughes Aircraft Co
and a few other small concerns in California many years ago. Basically
I was a production manager, dealing with material acquisition, labor
allocation, and sales. So I pop my resume off to Fender and wouldn't
ya know they emailed me back asking if I'd like to interview next
week. Didn't take but 10 seconds for me to fire back my "I'd love to"
answer.
The money promises to be less than I'd get by staying in my present
field, but hey... I'm gettin' too fucking old to be hunting and
pecking around burned out buildings, and chasing down unscrupulous
(sp) packs of illegal demolition hacks. Plus, I'd never have to deal
with another government agency again. I could easily spend the rest of
my working days hawking Fender's goods, arranging trade shows, and
"logistically coordinating", whatever in the hell that means. So we'll
see what this is all about next week. I just wanna know what kind of
discounts I get.
Wish me luck youse guys...

Sex is like air; it's not important unless you
aren't getting any
Thank you Bob... I'm not one to put all my eggs in one basket, but I'd
sure like to get the hell outa what I've been doing. And this sounds
like a dream job. However all corporate based positions carry the
inevitable political baggage one must deal with. Plus the pay will
probably be about $10K a year less than what I've been used to. But I
figure I can up my guitar students from 3 a week to about 6 or 7 and
make a lot of that up.
Sometimes peace of mind can be worth $10K. It was for me. About 5 years
ago I basically gave up $23K in salary because the job I was going into was
less stressful (and thus more enjoyable) than the one I had. I've never
regretted it, and as a consequence, I've now got more time for music and
other extra-curricular endeavors.
I'd recommend you keep your eyes open in the interview though; just because
it's Fender doesn't necessarily mean you won't wind up working for a bunch
of asswipes.- Hide quoted text -

I'm sure you're right Rich. Any corporation regardless of the product
or service they provide is always suspect. But it would be nice to be
involved with something a little closer to my heart.... know what I
mean? And I can appreciate your story about "downsizing" your career
for the benefit of your piece of mind. My wife just went through the
same thing. After 3 stents in her heart in the last 3 years she just
up and decided that the stress of running an office wasn't worth the
toll it was taking on her health. She took a job in a large office
where she was just one of the girls. It was a pretty decent cut in
pay, but she's happier for it, and her stress level is way down.
