Ok
Here's what I got.
I found a diagram for les paul with dual coil tap switch.
this allows switching of both pups to single coil.
I was thinking a different switch for each one, so you could have h/s
h/s if you wanted.
but Jims series/parallel also seems interesting.
so I was thinking..
one push pull for series/parallel
one push pull for single/dual
one push pull for in/out phase.
this would give me
three humbuck sounds A/B/A-B
three single coil sounds A/B/A-B
plus one s/p and one i/o phase sound. middle on three way both pups,
one each
ten sounds.
that ought to be enough for just about anyone.
So here's the hassle..
R W G B
hot ground hot ground
wires from each pup.
neck pup
R to mid lug vol pot 1 and from there to mid lug tone pot 1
W G soldered together to Switch 1 right mid lug
B to ground with bare wire
vol pot 1 left lug to three way
bridge pup
R to mid lug vol pot 1 from there to mid lug tone pot 2 and from there
to switch 1 lower left lug
W G sold. together to switch 1 left mid lug
vol pot 2 left lug to the other three way lug
the thing is.. (assume all grounds correct above. didn't wanna type
all that out)..
I have one tone control.
and how do I get from here to series parallel on the other switch.
So far, drawing this crap out piece by piece I seem to raise more
questions than I answer.
But that's the way to do it. And the way to show us what yur doin'!
I'd get a headache trying to draw out what you're describing. Do your
homework, write the schematic, and post an image. That way (A) you'll
probably find any mistakes you're making on your own; and (B) we can
start from the same page when discussing options.
I spose I'll have to reread the whole damn book. *L*
I was also thinking of varying the caps on the tone control.. push
pull for one cap or the other, instead of phase reversal.
FWIW, I like to reduce the value of the caps so that it raises the knee
frequency of the high cut. Result: more mids left behind, less muddy
sounding. This is a good idea for somebody that doesn't like the tone
set at zero.
The reason I want to do some special wiring here is the pups.. gold,
Alnico mag, 8.9K ohms, and 12 pole pieces.. so I can balance these
things very nicely and I think switching options would really put the
icing on the cake.
I'm sure that single tone control is what's messing my head up, and I
know I'm gonna feel total doofus when I see it.
But what the hell, what are alt.guitar friends for if not a hearty
guffaw and kick in the tenders.
thanks..
all good ideas.. I just can't get the multi meter to say it's right
yet.

As I understand it right now, I would need one push pull for each pup
for dual single operation.
but I cant' seem to figure out yet if I would need two push pulls to
then achieve series parallel...
But I'm starting to get my head around it and I'll post a drawing
soon.
I was thinking of .02 cap, instead of .05. and I want the treble cap
on each vol pot, too.

I may be adding to the confusion, I hope not, but my hum-to-single coil
switch is a DPDT that works on both pickups. So this means that you should
be able to do it on a standard push-pull pot. I can't get one single and one
hum, but as I understand it, you weren't looking for that anyway.
FWIW, my favourite sound on my Westone 335 knockoff, with SD Jazz pickups is
single coil, middle position. This is parallel, haven't tried series.
A 0.001microF cap worked well for me on the vol pot on the two guitars I
tried it, but it could have been even smaller, because the tone gets
brighter as I wind the volume down.
