Re: Addendum to Lewis' 'no pedals' post

On Mon, 16 Jul 2007 17:59:44 -0300, Squier <squier@xxxxxxxxxx> puked:

you know, I was thinking about this and someone else
mentioned this or inferred it - but this is the thing.

the amp itself is a giant 'pedal'
so tone geeks might sneer at people using pedals
and not going straight into an amp -

but if you had the money then you just go out and buy
as many amps as you need to produce the tones you want.

So no matter what sound you need you are always seen
as just 'plugging directly into the amp..." blah blah.

You need that Boogie sound - plug into Mesa/Boogie
You need that perfect cyrstal clear chimey with the
best reverb on the planet - plug into the Fender
You need that Marshall crunch - plug into the Marshall
You need that Vox creamy liquidy slight crunch stuff - plug into the Vox
You want overdrive without the need for treble boost - get a Budda.
and so on...

Or - are we getting down to recommended 'tone geek' approved amp list.
And only these amps are considered worthy of tone ?

Perhaps using the Budda is considered 'bad taste' but
the Bogner is on the 'approved' list worthy of tone geeks.
hmmm.. maybe we should just make up a specific list of approved items.
So Lollar's and Fralins would be on there (probably) but
DiMarzio and Duncan and GFS would not be on the highly exalted tone list. hmmmm....

So basically if you have the money and want to be 'tone geek' approved.
Stop wasting your money on pedals and just start buying a bunch of amps.

Of course if you play only one style or a narrow range - perhaps you
are doing original songs or have developed a signature sound - then
you only need one or two amps. But if you like to do covers and play
a wide variety of music - then you are gonna need a big truck, a strong
back and lots of amps. This way when they see you plug into amps directly -
everyone will know that you are a true tone seeker and worthy.

Ah.. so it all boils down to money again. right ?
So pedals are the workingman's compromise - and we can't have
workingman gear stamped as 'approved'.

ok - better get the Bogner and the Hiwatt too.

grrrr... I'm sorry but I just had to rant some more.

The thing is this - I agree that players should learn to play
directly into their amp(s). Clean playing makes you play better.
But that doesn't mean you have to do this all the time!
Grab a pedal or effect and have fun - let 'er rip!
I never thought that electric guitar players could be so stodgy
with 'approved tone geek' methods and 'approved' equipment.

I guess that Peavey Bandit or Bravo wouldn't make it on the list either.

And any solid state amp - throw it away! The tone gods do not approve
of these things! They are nasty. Look - let's make it easy ok ?
If it sounds or even looks like it was made after 1968 - toss it away.
The tone gods say that it's probably junk - so you'll be doing yourself a favor.

Alright - I'm done for now.

And Lewis - nothing personal!! I am half tongue in cheek here.
But c'mon - lighten up a little - music is about experimentation
and pedals make economic sense and sometimes tonal sense as well.

We don't all have $$$$$$$ to buy 10 different amps and we don't
all have the convenience to stay in a narrow but effective range of tones
provided by a single amp.

I guess working with what ya got comes in to play for a lot of people.
But I wouldn't overdrive my Fender the first 3 weeks I had it, just to
savor the flavor...
