Thank you in advance for your help.

I upgraded my processor over the weekend and now at bootup I get a
message that says something about not recognizing the Intel uCode
press F1 to proceed. I press F1 and it goes on to boot like normal.

I know I need to update my BIOS.

It might not be necessary. The microcode is basically a set of instructions that the processor uses to execute certain instructions (IIRC, not all machine code instructions are implemented with microcode). The BIOS should not need to recognise the CPU microcode because only the CPU itself uses it. It just means that you have to press F1 each time you boot the machine.

Is there a safe way to replace the
BIOS file without starting a nuclear war?

There is, but if you aren't confident doing it yourself I'd take it in to have it done for you under guarantee. You basically download the program to flash your BIOS chip and stick it on a boot disk, running it from there. The web page of your motherboard provider will provide you with the flash program and the instructions to do so.

Oh, and this...should I plug in the wire that goes from CD-ROM to the
motherboard that is supposed to supply digital sound?

It supplies the analogue signal from your CD player to your soundcard, presumably onboard in this case.

I've never done
that because I've always got sound from my CD-ROM anyway. What's the
point?

I only had to do it when I used Linux with audio CD programs that did not rely upon digital audio extraction. If you're using Windows, it uses digital extraction by default so there isn't any point. I still use it with Linux because I think it sounds better with my hardware.
