LOL ! they day they let me near a cisoc router was hilarious, "you can't ptogram that it takes x x x blah blah blah", yeah right, simple interface, unix like commands, read of a manual and had it up and running, orcket urgeseon me. dang if i didn't understand the protocols too, with loopback addresses, damned if I didn't cut them 20 new class C Ip addresses. "oh you mean you need a router between switches to connect two VLANS". he he. not bad fot a stoopid mainframe programmer.
walked away, went to lunch, "pickled", not spiced ham it was too.
You've forgotten the menu system on a Cisco as well. Pretty neat for those inopportune times when you forget a string of commands. I do that regularly. Loopback addresses are highly over rated though. Kind of like a last port in the storm in case you've forgotten how to actually route stuff. Mind you, having said that I tend to always throw in a loopback int if the schema warrants it. Tunnels are pretty fun. Crypto tunnels even funner. RIPv2? Not so much fun. VLAN's that lose their databases through corruption? No. Not fun at all. Mind you, they are Layer 2 (switching) and not necessarily Layer3 (routing) but, they can be but tend to be mainly focussed around the Catalyst. Well except for these little routing units that come with combined switches and routers. Typing in reload on a core router and actually confirming the prompt? Heart attack! Why? Because it didn't come back up. EEK! THe sound of 80,000 users suddenly going off line is deafening. Something about the software/processor not being able to cope with the level of commands I gave it.
Meh, live 'n' learn. That was a long time ago. I now regularly practice "reload in 5" on a config that works before sticking in something risky.
PS: routers are just another box with an operating system and a bunch of commands. Once you start treating them with that level of contempt, you'll do fine.
