Latency? I've heard this is a bigger issue with USB1.

More a question of the drivers, IIRC. If you aren't using ASIO drivers,
latency will be higher than acceptable. I don't get latency problems using
ASIO.

You can have terrible latency issues with FireWire devices, too, if you use
the wrong drivers.

Also, if you're ever thinking of using a mixer or anything like that,
you definitely don't want USB1.

That may depend on the number of channels, and most lower cost units, USB
and FireWire, limit this.

I'm using a mixer with a USB 1.1 device as I write this.

I really just wouldn't advise anyone paying $250 for an M-audio Fast-
Track Pro USB1 interface when you can get a USB2 interface with the
exact same feature set for actually less money that gives you a lot
more headroom to play with. I just don't know why you'd buy USB1.

And that interface would be... ? There aren't that many.

If it's the Edirol UA-101, that does have the advantage of allowing you to
actually use all the inputs at once. On most systems, including
lower-priced FireWire units, only two inputs can be active at any time.
For many people and applications, that's enough.

But the UA-101 is about twice the price of the FastTrack Pro; most places I
see advertise it as US$499. The UA-1000 is US$895.

If you're referring to the E-Mu 0202, it's not quite the same feature set,
as that model doesn't have phantom power. The 0404 does do phantom.. but I
see comments that the E-Mu software interface is not easy to understand.
Perhaps they lowered cost by ignoring usability concerns, or maybe it's OK -
I haven't seen their stuff. The Sound on Sound magazine review (which seems
favourable) is from January of this year, so it would appear to be fairly
new. Looks like a good thing, though.
