I put a GFS Fat PAF into the neck position of my thinline Tele-styleWell along with what RichCL said (flip the pickup around to
semihollow. Maple fretboard. There's nice bass and the midrange is
there, but not overly defined. I can live with that for a $25,
overwound humbucker, I guess. What I'm wondering about is the slightly
"peak-y" high end. There's a slight, harsh high overtone. I'm going to
throw this pickup into a different guitar, but on the surface, do you
guys think that an overwound PAF just isn't a good idea in a Fender-
scale, maple-necked guitar? In other words, not good for a naturally
bright guitar?
get the active poles either closer or further away from the
neck depending on how you have it installed currently) or
you could also go to a 500k tone and 500k volume pot.
I am guessing you are using the stock 250k pots in the Fender Tele.
After about pickups coming in around 8k or higher, the 250k pots really
don't let the higher wound pickups 'breathe' and open up. So what you
might be hearing is an overwound PAF being strangled by 250k pots.
I wouldn't go so far as to use 1 meg pots though.
I leave those for the 24k buzzsaw pickup people to play with.
Yeah, I'll go along with this. 250 K is just too low for a bucker,
especially an overwound one. You should hear a definite tonal difference
with 500 K.
