The current flows through all the tubes all the time. Just because
you're playing with a clean tone doesn't mean you're not using the
tubes. Without the tubes, you wouldn't have a preamp at all, only an
equalizer.
Well, it depends entirely on the amp. If I pull the 12AX7 out of P1 in my Silverface Fender, I can still play through the Vibrato/Reverb channel and have the amp function. And vice-versa. We need to see a schematic.
