I am sure many of you have super pro setups after lots
of years of playing, etc, but I am just
starting out and I'm really happy with
the sounds I can get. Works for me.
And it sounds great at low volume but will
also blow the doors down if necessary.
Squier, you have a very nice rig that you could do a lot with. I know
you're younger than most of the folks here (not sure how young), but
what you have is a lot nicer than what I had around your age. You
also take the time to research and learn about gear which is much more
than I can say for myself back-in-the-day.
When I was in my late teens/early twenties, I was using roughly this
setup:
Ibanez X Series guitar with some sort of Dimarzio in the bridge and a
single coil left on the floor of a rehearsal studio after a guy in
some other band decided to smash up a cheap Strat clone. I wired it
really weird so that the tone pot did something with the coil tap or
phasing (I don't remember which). I still have the guitar and it's a
real POS.
Fender Deluxe II. For a brief period, Fender made a version of the
Deluxe with a master volume. The amp itself was pretty good, but the
speaker was terrible. I plugged it in to another cabinet at one point
and still remember how much better it sounded but couldn't afford to
replace the stock speaker.
Boss DS-1. I know a lot of guys like those, but I think they sound
horrible. I ended up trading it to another guy for his Ibanez Sonic
Distortion (which I still have) and it wasn't much better.
Later, I upgraded to a silverface Bassman head and played that through
a 2x12 custom ported PA cabinet that I still own. It still has the
Peavey Scorpions that I bought for it some 15 years or so ago. I had
also bought a Marshall Microstack (still have it) and was using the
head from that as a preamp that I would plug into the front of the
Bassman and that actually sounded pretty good. Still had that same
guitar and continued to play it until I finally saved up for a Les
Paul around 14 years ago.
The Fender amps are long gone (there was also a silverface Deluxe and
a 50w Marshall JCM 800 2x12 combo at some point which I got by trading
the two Deluxes). I have no idea what I did with the Marshall but I
remember not liking it because it didn't have enough gain. Go figure.
I still have every electric guitar I ever owned except my very first
one which was a D'Agostino that I got as a teenager. I have no idea
where that guitar is and it's been getting under my skin lately.
