Mogens, I feel with you. A few weeks ago I broke my left wrist.
The cast is off right now but it still hurts.
See a good chinese acupuncture specialist. I had a good treatment yesterday, finga getting much better today. Less swollen, less pain, I can start with bending exercises for the legiment. Played half an hour no problemas on nylons - not _those_ nylons, you sexists :-D
Is there really really really something about that acupuncture thing that actually works? Any hard evidence on it working? Although, as many remedies, the remedy doesn't need to actually do anything, it's quite enough that the patient believes he's getting better.
5000 years+ history? But you're right about something. Just as very many illnesses are caused by ourselves, we can heal ourselves.
I can't give you hard evidence, links et al...
Only that I've been into this since late 80's in various forms.
Short story on how it began for me...
I had a serious car crash mid 70's, where I was squeezed firmly and my left knee damaged where the legiments attach to bones. Was told nothing to be done. End of martial arts as a coach and all. Couldn't even run for leasure, walk up long stairs without pain.
Nearly ten years later on a business trip to Singapore, I happenend to get in contact with a acupuncture specialist. Three treatments, never since pain in that knee. Ran up looon stairs to a shopping mall after first treatment without thinkinj about it. What? no pain? Wow!
Nope, I wasn't looking forward to the treatment, eagerly awaiting all problems solved. He was suggested to me, and I though why not try it.
A fellow business dude had just recovered from a broken bone in his foot from someone jumping down on it when playing serious basket, but still lotsa pain. He went too, and next day showed up in sweaty basket clothes at this suit'n'tie IT workshop. Been down chinatown playing basket...
Reminds me of this famous test where they gave some chinese guy who had never even held a needle, quickly showed him how to put the needles in, and gave him a huge bunch of customers which he proceeded give 'acupuncture' to, acting quite pro-looking but really just randomly sticking those needles in.
Scary stuff! Actually, considerable knowledge is required not to inflict damage. It's based on deep knowledge of meredians. Erroneous punches can cause damage.
There's a reson why I wrote "See a good chinese acupuncture specialist".
The fun thing about it was that the people who received this 'treatment' basically all were very happy and reported significant improvements in their condition and indeed they claimed they had less swelling and pain etc. No difference whatsoever with those who had received a 'real' acupuncture treatment.
Not having seen it, I can't comment.
This is what happens in placebo tests, and likely what happens in some cases where someone visits those alternative practitioners who doesn't have actual knowledge. Yes, I'm aware they exists.
Like anything with seeking treatment, it's our own responceability to seek information about it _before_ something happens.
Some may say doctors are supposed to know and do the Right Thing for us.
Since I got started in these waters, I've taken many courses in health (reflexology, dietry, lighter chieropractics..), and always seek out my own specialists.
Also, I've seen some who will believe _anything_ alternative works wonders. Clearly not the way to approach it. Nothing in this world has Universal Value.
If it was available, I _would_ spill Holy Water on my axes, though...
Would be very interesting to try that but I'm not sure if it's legal here, I guess it's labeled a hoax 'science' and thus illegal. But not sure. Personally I wouldn't mind if it was hoodoo if it made me feel better!
Wasn't legal in DK earlier. Dunno if the public hell'th care system supports it; I pay my chosen specialists from my own pockets.
You actually touch an interesting subject.
Here in DK, it's all called Alternative-whatever, when it's not publicly sanctioned. Don't like that expression.
I'd prefer all these directions be legalized, with required theory, practice under guidence et al.. followed by examns.
AFAIK, that's the way it is in Australia.
For 'outsiders' - like I guess you are ATM - it can be some task finding out what's what, who's who, what to choose and where.
