Just wondering what a compression pedal is going to do for me.. i have a
marshall jtm30 tube amp, i tried one out the other day at the music shop
on a traynor ycv, and to be honest, i didn't really get it ... i didn't
have long enough to play with it.

Any particular brands of pedals better? I trried a boss CS3.

When would i notice the use of compression pedals in music... or what
type of playing would it be beneficial with?

On Steely Dans Reelin In The Years there's a hellacious solo.. which I
believe used the rather dramatic Orange Squeezer compressor..
you can hear radical use of a compressor right there.. and what it's
doing is pretty obvious I think.

However, just about any country clean guitar solo for the last umpty
years has had compression on it.. to a lesser but no less useful
degree.

It can increase sustain..
It can vary attack time..
It gives you a more even output from string to string..

and it does some neat stuff when used with other things.. like
overdriven tubes.. various effects.

It's not like you'll even hear it as far as 'a sound' goes.. it can be
subtle or dramatic.. most people use it lightly..

Sustain is increased by a knob... which lets the comp. take a note, or
notes, and as they decay, boost their signal to a level or amount you
choose..

attack is affected by chopping off the initial loud peak sound of the
pick hitting the strings.. you can even set some of them so that it
cuts that off totally.. and some will swell.. you strike a chord..
nothing at first then it swells to volume..

it can take a guitar that has string to string output that, for
example, favors the mids.. so your D and G strings seem louder than
the rest, even with the thing set up nicely... and levels the output
so they all have the same volume..

all of these things can be used to hide some player error.. which is
nice for live stuff.. you get to screwing around winking at the
waitress or whatever and your slop gets hidden nicely.

and all of these things can be used specifically, just like any other
effect.

I use one with bass and with electric guitar..
I have one in my multi effects..
and I have a couple of Behringer CS100s which I like..
the attack knob is useless.. probably a consistent defect from using a
cheap pot. I don't care though.
but I have one of these on almost all the time.. with my epi vj I use
it as a boost....so I can overdrive the preamp and get some dirt
without digging entirely into the tubes.. so for the money.. I think
these behringers are pretty handy..

I'll add my 2 cents by doing a comparison:

let's say you set compression ratio at 30:1 (this is about as much
compression you can get)
Now you set the attack time at 0ms and the release time at 1000ms
What you'll get is a signal that stay always the same no matter if you
pick hard or not. (mostly)
Now if you invert that and make the attack at 1000ms and the release
at 0ms, what will happen is your notes will have a LOT(too much)
definition. Of course then you can go in between and try a much lower
ratio (normally 5:1 max)
Try it, and hear it. The barber tone press should be a good start, and
what's even cooler is that there is a blend option, so you have your
compressed signal AND your normal signal blended together so it sounds
more natural and more "round" ....
