Best I've ever played, that's for sure. Got a serial number and/or date? Mine is 01856M.

Mine is 04470M... It doesn't have the lit up rocker switches, it has 2 toggles, and the power light is small and square... I'm told it was "Canadian Issue"... I've never seen another one like it... Yes, it's original... That's all I know about it.

If it's Canadian, it's probably missing an output tap. Either 4 or 16 ohms, I can't remember.

It has a screwdriver dealie to switch the impedence. Yeah, it's missing one (which I thought was odd), but I don't know which one.

It's the "Canadian thing." But I've been told that it has the tap on the transformer, and you can change out the impedance selector. Somebody thought that there's already a spot on the switch, and all you have to do is solder. ...but that's all second hand, so I can't verify it.

The JMP is different than most JCM800 2204's because it is designed with lower voltage on the plates of the power tubes. That means more and earlier power tube distortion, even if the amp may actually test out to below 50W when clean.

Hmmmm... Seems like the 800's get more buzzy gain. This thing sorta sounds,............. Well, you know what it sounds like.

Middy and creamy with good, properly biased EL34. And it has a very good preamp distortion (at least if you have a real vintage Mullard ECC83 in V1). Of course speaker choice makes a difference. I run an early 70's Hiwatt 4x12 with the original Fanes in it.

I use a 4X12 Marshall with V30's...

Yes, I have a customized Marshall (began life as a JCM800 combo) Vintage 30 2x12 cab that I sometimes use. But it is DAMNED LOUD with Vintage 30's.

I don't have any Mullards tho. Forget what I put in the V1. What are guys using in the V1 of the DSL's these days?

I don't keep track of the "preferred tube" for DSL. It seems to me that some guys like JJ for current production in that amp.

When I'm not running the Tone Bones with Mullard EL84, I run JJ E34L. I want Mullard EL34, but I play this in my living room, I don't know if I can justify the expense when I rarely push EL34 into distortion.

Later Marshall's use a combination of IC gain stages and/or clipping diodes.

900's AND DSL's from what I understand use diode clipping. Less preamp tubes makes it easier and cheaper to get more gain. I like my DSL too, diodes or not. It just doesn't get recorded like my 2204.

Atomic? Astroverb?

Atomic... Snakeskin... I wanted to join Bon Jovi! :-)

How did you like it? I've got a donor chassis that has been sitting for years, waiting for me to transform it into that circuit. I already build the Matchless Spitfire circuit (2xEL84). But the Soldano has more gain and tone control.

I never liked the thing, just TOO much preamp gain for me. I sold it real fast. I'd probably really dig the Spitfire tho.

I bought mine new off the showroom floor. I was in a hurry. Did not even play it! (Probably foolish, I'd never do that now.). I said: "I already know what they sound like." Made a cash offer, waited while they disappeared to talk with a manager, said NO to their counter offer, and they took my deal.

You bought new in '80, or used later? In 80 I was using a Music Man HD 150 and would never have toughed a damned Marshall... But I was kida' dumb back then.

New off the showroom floor. I had been wanting a Marshall since I started to play. It was either that one or the four input JMP no master. I am VERY happy with my choice.

Wow... That's cool, one owner. Bet there aren't many like that out there!

I still have the sales receipt and hang tags from the handle. I think I paid around $650. A chunk of change in 80 or 81 when I bought it.

I've been VERY LUCKY with many of my gear purchases.

I'm sure you have a spare Mullard ECC83 you can let me "borrow" eh? ;-)

Jeff

I actually have one out on loan that I need to get back. I've had pretty decent luck in years passed with ebay. I haven't purchased any in the last few years because I have a comfortable hoard (maybe a dozen or so). But do NOT buy the "NOS" with box for CRAZY money. Buy a used but tested one from somebody with really good feedback.

If you happen to be in Seattle, I'd be happy to let you try one out.
