I don't think so... Country music is uniquely different
As much as I'd like to type a long retort about how much I disagree with you,
I'm not sure that I do after witnessing what I saw yesterday at the Kicks and
Eagle Country Fair in Atlanta.
I was there to see Dwight Yoakam. Dwight is the exception to everything
that's wrong with popular country music. He's a true artist in every sense of
the word, he writes all of his material, save for a few great covers, while
managing to keep it fresh and avoiding cliches for the most part.
Dwight headlined the festival, following Lone Star and Sara Evans. Their sets
consisted of not much else but a lot of manufactured Nashville pop fluff; the
redneck equivalent of a Britney Spears concert. Both singers were incredibly
talented, but as singers go there's nothing about either one that sets them
apart from their contemporaries, especially Sara Evans. Compare her to great
stars like Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Brenda Lee,
etc. Each had a great, unique voice and style. Most of today's popular
country singers all SOUND THE SAME!
The saddest part for me was seeing half of the crowd bail before Dwight
played. Many more left in droves early in Dwight's set, most of them when he
launched into an excellent four-song tribute to the recently departed, late,
great Buck Owens. Too old school for most of the crowd. While Sara Evans
played, there wasn't an empty seat in the house. It's sad.
However, there are still a good number of great artists today who are doing
country right. Junior Brown is an excellent example. So are Dwight, Hank
Williams III and the outstanding BR5-49, just to name a few. It's not to find
great country music these days if you know where to look, but you're sure as
hell not going to find it on country radio.
How often do you hear Johnny Cash on the radio these days? How many record
stores even have a single Buck Owens record on their shelves? It's enough to
make me wanna put on an old Webb Pierce record and cry in my beer.
I love country but am totally sick of big hats & big blonde boobies
playing schmaltzy formula redneck pop....
there is good country out there but you gotta dig in to find it
like all pop culture the surface stuff is rubbish..........
