Or possibly the poster ticked 'No X- archive' on his/her newsreader.

That generally is only honoured by google groups.

Ooops.. pressed the button to early. The "X-No-Archive:Yes" header is only
honoured by participating news servers. Google is probably the only one
that I know of in the big arena and I don't believe Google Groups reader
gives you an option of enabling it.

Possibly not, I dunno unless you can access the google archives with an
independent news reader. Xananews will give admin privileges depending on
whether your server/admin allows you to create new groups, tin used to as
well, years ago when I was at uni. Some NNTP servers will, just on a
Xananews newsreader request alone. Xananews will also allow you to mask your
newsreader and type in whatever newsreader you want and whatever message ID
you like, so that the only header scoring is on about three characters in
any post, if you so choose, but that's getting close to hIPkriMe. Not
advisable, bog brither iyes et awl. You won't see a particular newsreader
still downloadable becasue of such facilities . . . and maw.

It will mean that the post
will be overlooked entirely whereas the OP was describing a situation
where the post was there but had disappeared at a later stage. This would
be fairly typical of a) Over zealous news server admin cancelling the
post, or b) the original poster having cancelled their post through a
newsreader that has the ability to cancel originating post.

If cancelling after a fair delay it will be there, still. I've cancelled
some of mine in the past, but you have to be quick before it propogates. It
does appear on some servers though . . as I've discovered, unfortunately
:-(
