What's wrong with taking price and reputation into
account when it comes to having an opinion on a
product?

There's a difference between A) taking price into
account, and B) reasoning that more expensive =
better.

More expensive usually does mean better. Not
always. But it's generally true.
If you buy a sweater, odds are the $200 sweater will
be higher quality than the $10 one. If you walk into a
jewelrey store to buy an engagement ring, odds are
the $10000 one will be higher quality than the $500
one. etc etc.

Generally, you're right. But you should be careful
about assuming that higher cost = higher quality.

If I'm generally right then stop arguing with me! I don't assume this
is the case 100% of the time. That would be insane. But it is true
more often than not.

You can come up with some bonehead statement
like if they slapped a 2 million dollar price tag on a
Dodge Neon suddenly according to my logic it would
be the best car in the world, but that's not how the world
works. No one would do that. And obviously I don't
think this is some black and white rule that applies
100% of the time.
I take all the factors I mentioned into consideration,
not just one.

You've made judgments on price alone - see $69
Rondo. You knew nothing else about the guitar.

I'm sorry but it's an electric guitar that retails for $69. That means
it would have cost them like $35 to make. I stand by my position that
you cannot make a good electric guitar that retails for $69, unless
your plan is to lose money.

Is there anyone here who doesn't consider a
products reputation when buying something?

Lots of people buy on price alone. If they didn't,
Wal-mart wouldn't be as successful as it is.

As for price, with almost any product out there
and you name it, clothes, electronics, food,
guitars, cars, etc, there is a dirt cheap version,
a midranged priced version and an expensive
version.
Does anyone here seriously think that often the
dirt cheap version of any given product is just
as good or better than the expensive version??
That is not my experience.

You need more experience. We've been over
this. Some electronics products have the exact
same guts in their budget line as in their "prestige"
line. Different cosmetics.

No, I do not need more experience.

Does the term "close-minded" ring a bell?

I'm not closed minded but don't talk to me like I'm 12.

That's a load of crap and you know it.
Which electronic products?

I'd have to look it up, and you'd ignore it anyway.
I was surprised to learn that some CD/DVD players
were the same inside. It was at some hardware
review site - maybe tomshardware.

I read somewhere that with things like audio tape, batteries, etc,
they make most of it at one factory. The ones that pass the highest
level of inspection become Maxell, Duracell, etc. The one's that don't
become Memorex and Life Brand batteries. I would be more inclined to
believe something like that than they all have the same innards.

That sounds reasonable. So why do you say
bonehead stuff like "if a lot of people think
something is good, that makes it good" ?

That was in reference to art. Not stereo equipment.
How else do we know Aretha Franklin is a great
singer? Can it be measured? No, it can't.

Brilliant. I've said that all along. That's how this
mess started - when you said something was
"better" than something else.

We know she's a great singer because that's
the overwhelming consensus.

You've just re-stated that "popularity = quality".
(Before you accuse me of putting words in your
mouth, "popularity" is the same as "overwhelming
consensus".) You said nothing about her power,
range, phrasing, etc. Just her popularity. Dumb.

The quarterback on the football team in high school was popular. It
was no measure of his "quality"??

Here I'll give you an example of how I buy things
and you tell me if it's that different than what you
do. I'm looking at buying a new 27" TV from here :

Well Advent and Insignia TV's are pretty cheap.
Have I ever heard of them? No. Do they have a
good reputation? No, they don't. Next
Toshiba and Sony are names I trust so I'll get one
of them. The Toshiba is $329 and the Sony is $399.
The Sony is probably better but maybe the difference
is minimal. Then I would go to the store and check
them out. Unless the Sony is noticeably better than
the Toshiba, I would get the Toshiba and save $70.
Is that different than what you would do?

TVs are appliances. I'd buy on price and warranty
(especially on the low end) and then start looking
at qualities I value. You can look up numbers and
compare. I have no emotional investment in a TV,
toaster, computer, etc.
Guitars and music and singers aren't appliances.
A lot of the "judging" is personal opinion.

Yes it is. But if a lot of people agree on something, especially
people who are considered experts in that field than it means
something.
