I agree. I'm 46 so right there in the 70's "Sweet Spot".
68 or so to 80 or so I think was the greatest period for Rock Musicians,
particularly great Guitar players.
There are exceptions on either side, but I do believe that's the sweet spot.
Gilmour. Felder. Walsh and about a dozen others came into their own during
that period.

This is coming from somone who did miss the 70's, born early 70's to be
exact; I was talking with a friend of mine about "music as art" and
really it seems music started out with The Beatles and Elvis as being
more about overall entertainers, watching those early videos in black &
white and I clearly see more entertainment value than talent (I know
I'll get some heat for that, but it's true).
Then somewhere in the late 60's through maybe 81 or so, let's so up
untill MTV launched, these was the special period where it was all
about expression and art and that was the entertainment value, it
didn't need anymore.... It didn't matter if you could sing or even play
all that well, but if you had a strong message that would make its way
through.
After MTV hit it was back to being all about entertainment value again,
there were a few talented acts in the 80's, I'm thinking of Sting's
material during that period and U2, Springsteen, a few others, but
overall it was bubble gum..
Today it seems only the "best of the best" get radio play, problem is
the "best of the best" is what the music industry views as what are
safe bets that willl work, selfdom does anyone take risk and in todays
industry a band must be able rock solid as musicians and a attractive
frontman (relative to what your audience will see as attractive) and
your songs have to fit into the radio ready template so that radio will
play them. If your songs happen to have solid lyrics and your have a
message you're trying to send out (if you're trying to be an artist)
good luck with that, it can work, but sadly to the industry it comes
after all the other items I mentioned.
So will there be another period like the 70's where the art of the
music becomes the most important part... I think so, I think Indie rock
is doing that now and it's just going to continue to grow untill it's
at the point where it distroys the current recording industry (it will
be destroyed or forced to adapt) what a beuitful day that will be,
because the artist will get back a lot of control I think.... the cost
of that will be that the musicians probably won't see the same kind of
stardom that the biggest acts do now, but most record label money comes
with strings or is altogeather borrowed money anyway, so I still think
a Indie rock revolution would still be the for the better. Especially
if it takes away jobs of those in the industry who have severed to
destroy it and make it what it is today...
