I drink water or soda at open mics. I've never run into a problem
with this because the 'free' music is often attracting other customers
the establishment would not otherwise have. At two of the open mics I
go to each performer gets a small beer for performing. One is on a
Saturday afternoon from 2:00 to 7:00 and plays to a full house.


What has me concerned is that I like to watch live music, and would
like to participate in open mic jams, but will the bar owners ask me to
leave if all I order is a couple of sodas? I expect a lot of teasing,
but I'm serious.

The bar owner usually has a house band that runs the jams. Drop by
and check it out. And if you think buying just soda is going to be a
concern, ask up front and get it out of the way. One place I go to
gives me bottomless soda instead of my free beer for playing.
